[03/11/2023] Marriage and Wedding Activities that Oppose the Qur’an and Sunnah – By Abu Khadeejah ‘Abdul Wahid  حفظه الله. Khutbah at Masjid Salafi, Small Heath, Birmingham, UK.

Some points discussed during this Khutbah:

  • Following the sunnah of the Messengers in getting married.
  • A warning against falling into disobedience and opposing the Sunnah in affairs related to marriage:
  • 1. Exaggeration in demanding excessive dowry/mahr.
  • The best dowry/mahr.
  • The total amount of mahr the Prophet ﷺ gave to his wives or asked for his daughters.
  • The corruption of imitating the Hindus in the groom demanding a gift from the bride’s family.
  • 2. Exchanging rings upon engagement.
  • Shaykh al-Albānī (رحمه الله) on imitating this habit of the Christians.
  • 3. Putting the bride and groom on an elevated stage among men and women.
  • Shaykh Ibn Bāz (رحمه الله) on the evil of this practice.
  • The Prophet’s ﷺ warning against entering the gatherings of women.
  • 4. Taking pictures and making videos at weddings.
  • Those most severely punished on the Day of Resurrection.
  • 5. Hiring singers and musicians.
  • Clear proof from the Sunnah prohibiting musical instruments.
  • Imām al-Awzā’ī (رحمه الله) on entering a walīmah where there is music and singing.
  • That which is permissible to do at weddings in this regard.
  • 6. Excessive spending on weddings and walīmahs.
  • Being moderate and not going to extremes.
  • 7. Wearing clothing that expose the bodies (for men and women).
  • Dressing in accordance to the Sunnah and not imitating the kuffār in their garments or hairstyles. 
  • Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymīn (رحمه الله) on attending walīmahs where there are various sins.
  • Parents taking a firm stance if their children want these forbidden things at their wedding. 
  • 8. Spending all day and night in celebration and giving up/delaying the prayer beyond its time.
  • 9. Spending the “honeymoon” in a place of sin and behaving like the sinners.
