[10/01/2024] Be Keys to Goodness, Not Keys to Evil – By Abu Ukkashah ‘Abdul-Ḥakīm حفظه الله. Lesson at Masjid Salafi, Small Heath, Birmingham, UK.

Some points discussed during this lesson:

  • Benefits from the ḥadīth, “Certainly, from amongst the people are those who are keys to goodness and closers to the doors of evil; and from amongst the people are those who are keys to evil and closers to the doors of goodness. So glad tidings (of Paradise) to those whom Allāh places the keys of goodness in their hands and woe to those whom Allāh places the keys of evil in their hands.”

  • Asking ourselves, are we a cure to those around us, or are we a disease?
  • Imām as-Sa’dī (رحمه الله) on the āyah, “And He has made me blessed wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me Ṣalāh (prayer), and Zakāh, as long as I live.” [Sūrah Maryam 19:31]
  • How the Prophet ﷺ connected belief in Allāh and the Last Day to personal accountability.
  • Benefits from Imām as-Sa’dī (رحمه الله) regarding the āyah, “(And remember) when Allāh took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) to make it (the news of the coming of Prophet Muḥammad and the religious knowledge) known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it, but they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And indeed worst is that which they bought.” [Sūrah Āl ‘Imrān 3:187]
  • Protecting ourselves from the snares of Shayṭān by purifying our hearts.
  • Benefits from the āyāt, “The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail, except him who brings to Allāh a clean heart.” [Sūrah ash-Shu’arā’ 26:88-89]

  • From making dhikr and counting stones in the masjid to fighting with the Khawārij against the Companions of the Messenger ﷺ.
  • Benefits from the āyāt, “Those among the Children of Israel who disbelieved were cursed by the tongue of Dāwūd and ‘Īsā b. Maryam. That was because they disobeyed (Allāh and the Messengers) and were ever transgressing beyond bounds. They used not to forbid one another from the munkar (wrong, evil-doing, sins, polytheism, disbelief, etc.) which they committed. Vile indeed was what they used to do.” [Sūrah al-Mā’idah 5:78-79]
