[05/07/2025] The Manner the Muslims Fast the Day of ‘Āshūrā is Different to the Jews – By Abu Idrees Muhammad Khān حفظه الله. Khuṭbah at Masjid As-Sunnah An-Nabawiyyah, Aston, Birmingham, UK.

Some points discussed during this Khuṭbah:

– The benefits of the supererogatory fasts outside of Ramadan.

– The virtues of fasting in the month of Al-Muharram.

– Focus on the 10th day of Al-Muharram – the Day of Āshūra.

– The reward of fasting this day is forgiveness of sins of the previous year.

– The reason for singling out the 10th day of Muharram for fasting.

– The Jews of Madinah were fasting this day and explained that this day is a great day as Allah saved Musa and his people from Fir’own by splitting the sea.

– Musa fasted to show gratitude to Allah.

– Prophet ‎ﷺ said that the Muslims are closer to the Prophet Musa than the Jews so he commanded to fast this day and the day before it to differ from the Jews.

– The shariah of Islam encourages us to be different from the Jews and the Christians in all of our affairs.

– In this day Muslims resemble the non-Muslims and even justify their actions with Islam.

– The strongest opinion is the permissibility of fasting on Saturday alongside another day.

– Advice to be cautious with the hadith: “Whoever resembles a people then you are from them.”
