All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all creation—and may He extol the Messenger in the highest company of Angels, and grant him peace and security—likewise to his family, Companions, and true followers.
[22/08/2025] Evil Companionship – Shaykh Abu Fuḍayl ‘Abdur Raqīb حفظه الله. Khuṭbah at Masjid As-Sunnah An-Nabawiyyah, Aston, Birmingham, UK.
Some points discussed during this Khuṭbah:
– The importance of righteous companionship and the harms of evil companionship.
– Companionship can be on an individual basis or a societal/ communal situation.
– Allāh تعالى said: “Verily! As for those whom the angels take (in death) while they are wronging themselves (as they stayed among the disbelievers even though emigration was obligatory for them), they (angels) say (to them): “In what (condition) were you?” They reply: “We were weak and oppressed on earth.” They (angels) say: “Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?” Such men will find their abode in Hell – What an evil destination!” [Surah Nisa (4): 97].
– The story of the man who killed 99 men.
– Mankind can be affected by those whom he associates with swiftly.
– Hadith: Arrogance and pride is found amongst camel herders and tranquility is found against sheep herders.
– The signs and the characteristics of an evil companion.
– Story of when the Prophet ﷺ went to Abu Talib on his deathbed who was accompanied by the chiefs of the Quraysh – encouraging him to accept the shahadat and his companions encouraging him to stay upon the religion of Abdul Muttalib.
– Allah تعالى says: “Verily! You (O Muhammad ) guide not whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He knows best those who are the guided.” [Surah Qasas (28): 56].
– Advice to choose good companions over evil companions so you don’t have any regrets.
– Allah تعالى says: “And (remember) the Day when the Zalim (wrong-doer, oppressor, polytheist, etc.) will bite at his hands, he will say: “Oh! Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger (Muhammad ﷺ).
“Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a friend!
“He indeed led me astray from the Reminder (this Qur’an) after it had come to me. And Shaitan (Satan) is ever a deserter to man in the hour of need.” [Surah Furqan (25): 27-29].
