[13/12/2025] The Means of Acquiring Beneficial Knowledge – By Abu ‘Inaayah Seif حفظه الله. Lesson at Masjid As-Sunnah An-Nabawiyyah, Aston, Birmingham, UK.
Some points discussed during this lesson:
– Shaykh Zayd al-Madkhalī (رحمه الله) on seeking and loving knowledge being a defining characteristic of the Salafī manhaj.
– “Allāh will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.” [Sūrah al-Mujādilah 58:11]
– “Is one who is obedient to Allāh, prostrating himself or standing (in prayer) during the hours of the night, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the Mercy of his Lord (like one who disbelieves)? Say: ‘Are those who know equal to those who know not?’ It is only men of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allāh’s Signs and Verses).” [Sūrah az-Zumar 39:9]
– Means of acquiring beneficial knowledge:
– 1. Acknowledging the dire need for knowledge and recognising the danger of ignorance.
– Ibn al-Qayyim and Ibn Rajab (رحمهما الله) on the reality and importance of beneficial knowledge.
– A ḥadīth that highlights the dangerous consequences of ignorance.
– Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) on ignorance being a deadly disease, and wherein lies its cure.
– 2. Asking Allāh to increase you in beneficial knowledge.
– The command and supplication of the Messenger ﷺ regarding asking Allāh for beneficial knowledge.
– The meaning of beneficial knowledge, and its fruits.
– “It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allāh.” [Sūrah Fātir 35:28]
– Ibn Rajab (رحمه الله) on the connection between beneficial knowledge and khashyah of Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى).
– The effect of knowledge upon the heart.
– Seven signs that knowledge has truly benefited a person.
– Traits of the one who has not benefitted from his knowledge.
– Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) on the signs of happiness and misery.
– The necessity of humility when seeking and disseminating knowledge.
– Fleeing from the dunyā, leadership, fame and praise of the people.
– 3. Ikhlāṣ.
– The intention we should have when seeking knowledge.
– Statements from Imāms Sufyān ath-Thawrī and ash-Shāfi’ī (رحمهما الله) regarding the necessity of correct intention when seeking knowledge.
– Aḥādīth warning against corrupt intention when seeking knowledge.
– 4. Taqwā of Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى).
– “O you who believe! If you obey and fear Allāh, He will grant you Furqān [a criterion]” [Sūrah al-Anfāl 8:29]
– Shaykh al-‘Uthaymīn (رحمه الله) on the meaning of furqān.
– 5. Striving hard to attend the gatherings of knowledge.
– Proof from the Sunnah that knowledge is to be sought and requires effort.
– Shaykh Zayd al-Madkhalī (رحمه الله) on giving importance to the circles of knowledge.
– The tremendous blessing of being able to establish gatherings of beneficial knowledge in these lands.
