[03/01/2025] 10 Reasons That Prevent a Person from Implementing Their Knowledge – By Uways At-Ṭaweel حفظه الله – Masjid Dār us-Sunnah, London.
Some points discussed during this lesson:
– A warning against not acting in accordance to one’s knowledge.
– Statements from al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī, Sahl at-Tustarī and Fuḍayl b. ‘Iyāḍ (رحمهم الله) on acting upon one’s knowledge.
– Ten barriers in implementing the knowledge Allāh has blessed us with:
– 1. Not knowing that knowledge is for the betterment of the individual and is a delight and happiness.
– The great reward for those who implemented their knowledge.
– Statements from Sahl b. ‘Abdillāh, an-Naḍr b. Shumayl, Abūl-Qāsim al-Junayd and Aḥmad b. ‘Aṭā’ ar-Rūdhabārī (رحمهم الله) regarding the fruits and essence of knowledge.
– 2. The heart does not deserve to have it.
– The home of knowledge.
– Examples from the Qur’ān regarding the heart that does not accept or implement knowledge.
– The three types of hearts.
– The two avenues to the heart.
– As-Sa’dī (رحمه الله) on the meaning of ‘fiqh’.
– Ibn Kathīr (رحمه الله) on the verse, “…They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear…” [Sūrah al-A’rāf 7:179]
– Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (رحمه الله) on the four signs of sorrow.
– Imām Mālik (رحمه الله) on the punishment of having a hard heart.
– 3. Destructive envy and arrogance.
– How arrogance and envy lead Iblīs to sins, the Yahūd to reject the Messenger ﷺ, and prevented ‘Abdullāh b. Ubayy and Abū Jahl from embracing Islām.
– 4. [Fear of jeopardising one’s] position and status.
– The example of Hiraql and Fir’awn in this regard.
– Abūl-Wafā’ ‘Alī b. ‘Aqīl al-Ḥanbalī (رحمه الله) on harmful distractions that lead to a person’s downfall.
– 5. Desires and wealth.
– Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Rajab’s (رحمه الله) definition of desires.
– Abūl-Mudhaffar as-Sam’ānī (رحمه الله) on those who gave precedence to their desires over the revelation.
– The example of the poet al-A’shā and how he died upon disbelief due to giving precedence to his desires.
– The four pillars of all despicable characteristics.
– Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) on how following desires diverts a person from the primary objective.
– 6. Excessive love for your family, relatives and tribes.
– The obligation of giving precedence to love of the Messenger ﷺ.
– 7. Loving your country and homeland.
– A warning against giving precedence to one’s tribe or homeland over fleeing to Allāh and obeying the Messenger ﷺ.
– 8. The doubt that following Islām is disparagement and disrespect directed at your parents and forefathers.
– How this caused Abū Ṭālib to die upon disbelief despite knowing the Messenger ﷺ was upon the truth.
– Lines of poetry composed by Abū Ṭālib expressing what prevented him from following the Messenger ﷺ.
– 9. Your enemy is a follower of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.
– Why loving and hating has to be for the sake of Allāh (عز وجل).
– The Jews’ refusal to accept Islām due to their enmity for the Anṣār.
– 10. Familiarity, habit and upbringing.
– A warning against allowing our upbringing to overwhelm our knowledge and prevent us from acting upon it.
– Striving to be from those who yearn to acquire knowledge of the revelation and act upon it.
– Summary of the reasons for rejecting the truth and not acting in accordance to it.
– The obligation upon every Muslim to seek knowledge.
