All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all creation—and may He extol the Messenger in the highest company of Angels, and grant him peace and security—likewise to his family, Companions, and true followers.
[26/07/2024] Summer Conference 2024: “The Virtue Is With Your Elders.” – Abu Al-Ḥasan Mālik حفظه الله. Khuṭbah at Masjid Salafi, Small Heath, Birmingham, UK.
Some points discussed during this Khuṭbah:
- The age of maturity and full strength.
- The virtue of age in the dīn of Allāh.
- The meaning of the statement of ‘Abdullāh b. ‘Abbās (رضى الله عنه), “The blessing is with your elders.”
- The reason ‘Abdullāh b. ‘Umar (رضى الله عنه) did not respond to a question posed by the Prophet ﷺ even though he knew the answer.
- The scholars’ dislike for narrating in a country that has someone older than them.
- Samurah b. Jundub (رضى الله عنه) on what stopped him from speaking even though he had memorised narrations from the Messenger ﷺ.
- The response of Sufyān b. ‘Uyaynah when a man asked him a question in the presence of Abū Bakr b. ‘Ayyāsh (رحمهم الله).
- Honouring and respecting the elders is from our way.
- ‘Abdullāh b. Mas’ūd (رضى الله عنه) on a necessary condition for the people to remain upon good.
- Proof from the Sunnah to show that the young one should not speak in the presence of his elders.
- Sufyān ath-Thawrī’s (رحمه الله) strong rebuke of a young man who was from the people of knowledge, but he spoke in the company of those older than him.
- How to deal with those who disrespect the elders and those who preceded them.
