All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all creation—and may He extol the Messenger in the highest company of Angels, and grant him peace and security—likewise to his family, Companions, and true followers.
[15/08/2025] A Large Number of People Following an Opinion Doesn’t Make it True! By Shaykh Abu Khadeejah ‘Abdul Wāḥid حفظه الله. Khuṭbah at Masjid Salafi, Small Heath, Birmingham, UK.
Some points discussed during this Khuṭbah:
– A decisive hadīth that clarifies the misconception that a large number of people is indicative of the truth.
– Measuring men by way of the truth, not the other way around.
– An example from Shaykh al-Islām (رحمه الله) which highlights that truth is only established by way of evidence, not numbers.
– Ibn Mas’ūd (رضى الله عنه) on the meaning of the jamā’ah in the sharī’ah.
– Fudayl b. ‘Iyād (رحمه الله) on clinging to the path of guidance and staying away from the paths of misguidance, regardless of numbers.
– The way of Ahlut-Tawhīd throughout the generations.
– The example of Ibrāhīm (عليه السلام) who was described as an ummah on his own upon the truth.
– The necessity of using the Qur’ān and Sunnah as a measure.
– Imām as-Sa’dī (رحمه الله) on the verse, “And if you obey most of those on earth, they will mislead you far away from Allāh’s Path. They follow nothing but conjectures, and they do nothing but lie.” [Sūrah al-An’ām 6:116]
– Abū Shāmah al-Maqdisī (رحمه الله) on the intent of the command to cling to the jamā’ah.
– The reason the ghurabā are different to the general people.
– Signs of the hour.
– The consequences of the disappearance of knowledge.
– Following the truth and sticking to the affair as it was in the beginning when fitnah emerges.
