The Book of Fasting in Ramadān – from the explanation of Zād Al-Mustaqni’ – Series by Abu Khadeejah 2017

Lesson 1: Introduction. The book, its author, its importance, its explanations. The Book of Fasting in Ramadan – definition, meaning, importance and virtues.

 

Lesson 2: When does the fasting of Ramadan begin? The moon sighting and witnesses. When does one seek the month and who’s witness is accepted? The use of calculations to decide the beginning of the month? The use of telescopes or binoculars – and the effect of cloud cover.

 

Lesson 3: Does the sighting of one country apply to other countries? The discussion of Kuraib with Ibn Abbās regarding the different sighting between two countries: the varying positions of the four Imāms and other scholars. The view of Ibn Qudāmah, Al-Fawzān and others. Ibn Uthaimeen on who is considered to be a trustworthy witness whose sighting can be accepted; the pre-requisites.

 

Lesson 4: Upon who is fasting obligatory? Age, sanity, ability. If one realises that today is the first day of Ramadan, what does he do? If the menstruating woman becomes pure before Maghrib on a fasting day? 

 

Lesson 5: The one who is excused from fasting due to old age or sickness (temporary or permanent) and the traveller. 

 

Lesson 6: The pregnant and breastfeeding woman: what do they do and how do they make up? When does one make the intention for the obligatory and optional fasting?  a person intends to fast then falls unconscious or into insanity or temporary madness for a part or whole of the day.   The one who sleeps the whole day and stays awake through the night in gossip. The woman who is constantly pregnant or breastfeeding for a decade. What does she do? 

 

Lesson 7:  A doubtful intention for the beginning of Ramadān. Obligatory fasting requires a continuous intention.When is the intention to be made for the obligatory fast and can it be broken with an intention to break it without eating or drinking? When can an intention for the optional fast be made and how is it severed? That which nullifies the fast: food, drink, sniffing water, injections – various types of injections.

Masturbation, ejaculation or pre-seminal discharge by fondling, ejaculation by looking; also hijāmah, blood transfusions, blood test, teeth removal, vomiting.

 

Lesson 8: The one who falls into a violation (eating, drinking, etc) forgetfully; if a fly or dust enters the throat; thoughts of the opposite sex that causes climax to occur; wet dreams, bathing (ghusl); rinsing the mouth; sniffing water into the nose such that it reaches the throat; smoke that is sniffed or inhaled.

The one who continues to eat whilst in doubt concerning fajr. The one who breaks his fast whilst in doubt concerning maghrib (sunset).

The one who has sexual intercourse whilst fasting. 

Lesson 9: The one who ejaculates by touching a woman, or if a woman is compelled with intercourse. Or the one who has sexual intercourse whilst on a journey. Is there an expiation to pay?

The expiation for sexual relations many times in one day or over a few days. What is the expiation and how much? 

Things that are disliked for the fasting person: gathering saliva and swallowing, tasting food for no reason, bringing phlegm into the mouth and swallowing, chewing hard gum, and dissolving gum, kissing one’s wife and getting aroused.

Lesson 10: It is obligatory to abandon lying, backbiting and abusing others whilst fasting and at all times. If someone falls into these evil habits, what effect does it have upon the fast?

The obligation to hasten the breaking of the break in the evening. With what should one break his fast: dates, water, etc? Taking the pre-dawn meal: its importance and emphasis. When should one stop eating before fajr? The difference between the fasting of the People of the Book and the Muslims.

Lesson 11: Al-Qadā: How one is to make up the missed fasts and for how long can that be delayed? What if one dies before making up missed fasts?
